First post in a while

Hi Brian, this is the painting I was working on when Elliot was painting me. I'm not quite finished but since you were patiently waiting to see something from me I thought I'd post it now and get some advice before I finish up. I'm not crazy about my bushes in the front, the top deck on the left doesn't read so well and the window frames look a little un-painterly. If you or anyone else have any suggestions they would be more than welcome!

This is a little 12x12" (acrylic). Not sure if the dark "frame" in the composition works or not, but with all the contrast it was fun to do.

This is a bigger study, not done, but as far as I can go without the oils getting muddy. May revisit it intwo weeks when it's dry :) A still life, which I like because the colour is so much easier for me to see. I do the value study in acrylic. This one is 16X20 the smallest canvas I had on hand. It's called Black and Blue.....good name hey Brian? I find it a touch stiff not that beautiful, but a valuable study.

Ok I did another little study. I didn't touch my set up, yes elliot it was my first still life, and my first time using oils, which I am really having fun with. They are both tiny at 9X12

The first one which you have seen was done at night with a strong halogen light shining on it, super easy to see all the different colours. The second one which I did this morning had a diffused overcast light. It was more difficult to see all those colours, but rather the "local" colour. I have not yet put in the slight shawdow which feels almost non existant, what you see is the slight reflection. But it is amazing to see them side by side, so totally differant, both beautiful in there own way.

FALL TREES (reworked)

Yes, this is the same painting that was here but only reworked, felt it had too much yellow and I was thrown off with the values , which in the photo are fairly close. Anyways, I'll give this one a rest for a while and then look at it again....36x60" oil/canvas. C&C welcome, Brian

First attempt at plein air. I thought it was very difficult. The painting seems wierd to me--any help?

Wisteria Vine

A 12x16 acrylic that I am not quite done with. I had difficulty with this one because there was not a great deal of difference in value between the vine and the stone wall on the left. As Page has told me, sometimes photos are flawed. I think the photo was taken on a cloudy day. But I loved the composition so much I had to try painting it. Suggestions welcome, Brett

At the Races!

A 16x20 Acrylic I just finished yesterday. The sky is actually a light blue, but the sun washed it out. Only two hooves are actually touching the ground. A year ago I would never have imagined painting this or any of my other paintings in my wildest dreams! Thanks, Brian!

Macky and Mr. Octopus

I took this photo of my mother's pug "Macky" several years ago and she has had it as as her the desktop photo on her computer ever since. I decided to paint it for her for Mother's day. "Mr. Octopus" was Macky's favorite stuffed toy while it lasted. A 12x12 acrylic.

Beaver lake

Hi all,

Where is everyone?Painting must be on the back burner. I look forward to some new postings/comments. Here is a new one. I'm not sure how I feel about it. I had alot of fun playing with colour, but think some of the combinations might be a bit wacky, which part of me is attracted to and part of me is repulsed by. It's the same feeling when you drive by a car accident. Believe it or not this was create with only 2 different colour combos with varying amounts of the colours within the combo, and tint. I have a hard time capturing light on a high overcast day. Or in any situation where it is not blatantly obvious. It's 14X18 I'll be curious to see when the "painting Gods" decide to visit me again. In the mean time......keep painting.

Old Bottles

The is an 12x16 acrylic of a row of old bottles I painted last weekend. It was fun to create the appearance of translucency with the different values of the colors.
The photo is a little distorted, since the bottles in the painting are straight, not leaning to the sides.

Autumn Barn - revision

Here is a revised version of my autumn barn I posted earlier. I made the barn darker, and hopefully more "settled in," and the foreground less "tippy-tappy." Thanks Brian, Elliot, and Page for your comments.

Revision with help

I posted an earlier version of this and wanted to posted with some re-works that ended being a good learning process for me. My friend Page helped me a lot with facial proportions. Brian made some helpful comments about brushwork. Then Steven pointed out how the protrusion of the mouth and the white of the eye show that this was done from a close up photo (not that this is bad necessarily, but I didn't know it was so obvious). Anway... I could have left it as it was, but as I said, it was a good learning piece.

It was fun to do something more abstract. I did the underpainting in quinachronone (sp?) violet.
