This is a 48x60 (4 ft x 5 ft) canvas... by far, the largest I've done. It's the same scene--different photo--as I posted earlier. It was definitely fun painting on this scale. I feel like I need more practice to get the feel of it though. I'd love any feedback--especially thoughts on what may not be working here.
Beautiful Elliot, strong color and great design...quite abstract yet we can tell what things are. A wonderful piece that would look awesome on anyones wall! Love this! Brian

ReplyDeleteYes, great stuff and still with the vigour of the smaller work. Hurray for big brushes! But I'd like to see beyond the beach huts (if that's what they are) to the distant horizon which would contrast with the table in the foreground (and maybe something on the table?). I always think of 3 elements in my composition: foreground, middleground and background...
ReplyDeleteAwesome!!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the comments everyone. That's an interesting thought Dan. My friend Steven who paints a lot of landscapes taught me about fore, mid, background, but I haven't really considered that outside of landscapes. Good thought though.
ReplyDeleteHi, I aggree with all people said but what about if the little part of clear blue at the left (about in the middle) would be in this deeper blue (Hou!what an english!!sorry) It could give a more vivid contrast...just an idea.
ReplyDeleteHey L.
ReplyDeleteya great canvas!
Brushwork... color... design - are all awesome.
I wonder if... the ''color'' and value of the warm blue is in the shadows? If so, maybe a bit cooler, less chroma and darker in value might have it ''laydown'' a bit more... and make the umbrellas - sing - (as coach says).( I see lots of value contrast in the sunny areas of the floor. )
Another interesting feature I see... and would wonder about if it was to hang in my space... the yellow and red umbrella poles seem to be attached to the back posts of the chair - and would wonder if that was the artist's intent?
No biggie, but,,, would be wondering...
Great job on your first big canvas!
Congrats
Steven
Hey L!
ReplyDeleteNICE CANVAS!
Lively and Lovely.
Brushwork, Chroma, Design,,, all work for me.
I wonder, tho, if the periwinkle-blue color behind the umbrellas is a shadow in the building? If so, a bit darker value, less chroma and slightly cooler temperature might read more accurately and make the ubrellas sing - like coach says-...
(Compare to the contrast of the sidewalk highlights vs shadows- def not saying it needs that much contrast variation, but... for me the periwinkle - as a background competes a bit with the foreground umbrellas)
Also, I would wonder if the artist's intent was for the yellow and red umbrella poles to look like they are coming out of the chair posts? Maybe it reads different in person on that scale,,, but a 3x4.5 inch picture on the laptop???
Overall a fun, happy, well executed piece! Congrats.
