The neigbour's door

I've done a couple of paintings lately that I'm very unsatisfied with. Here is one. I hope you can give me some insight as to how to improve. I wanted this door picture to show how shaded the door was while the courtyard behind the gate was very bright.

  1. Hi Paula, I like the colours and composition here...I might try darkening the green trees at the top of the painting. This will make the sunlit area above the gate seem brighter. You can also lighten the colours of the sunlit area a bit more to create more contrast and see how it works, Brian

  2. Hi Brian. Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try them.
Also, I keep forgetting to mention the size of the painting: 18x24 on board.

  3. Hi Paula,

This one draws me in and makes me wonder what is behing the gates....maybe using cooler colors in the shadow areas would help to make the lit areas warmer???
