Here's a better picture finally got the camera to work. Had to rework the face a bit last night.

Oil on Canvas 18x24 I tried my first figure painting in oil. This is my neice at one of her recent dance recitals. Hope everyone's having a great summer! Sharka

  1. Hi Sharka, great effort on this one. I wonder if the head is too big though? Hope you can remember to NOT paint figures or faces, but just the shapes that make up those things and allow the "subject" to show up when its ready????

  2. Hi Brian, I think the head can appear a little big depending on the pic because the hair is pulled back and in some lights she appears bald (the hair is dark) - I drew her with a grid originally and, we checked, the proportions seem ok. I wanted this one detailed but in general did paint by shapes and tones - I just tried really detailed shapes! :)
As always I apprecite your comments/suggestions as they made me rework the face a bit! Thanks!Sharka

  4. Interesting painting. draw, position and colors. For my part, of course I haven't seen the picture but I think that at the end of the skirt we should find the knees. If we hide the bottom of the painting with our hand we see that it is proportioned till the end of the skirt.I allow me to say. bye.

  5. ok,may be because the face looks older than you want. an older person is taller. If I imagine a younger girl the body can be right.

  6. Hi Christiane, Thanks for the observations - in the photo she is doing a curtsey so both legs are very bent at the knees inside the dress thus the legs/feet show as they do. It's good to hear peoples' impressions as it's obvious proportion in a figure is very important to the eye - a good thing to always keep in mind. Sharka
