House in the Palms

Hi Everyone, I'm new here. I purchased Brian's book about 2 years ago but didn't do much. We recently moved to Florida and want to paint my heart out...scenery and light is incredible. I've watched your blog for several months and enjoy Brian's colors, Dave's portraits, Asma's serenity, Julie's perspectives, Elliot's joyful soul, and Ralph's lovely landscapes. I'm looking for an honest critique of my work. I want to improve so please tell me where I can improve. I finished this Florida landscape recently, 18 X 24 oil. Thank you, Carolyn

  1. Welcome Carolyn, At first I thought it was Asma's painting. This is great! I feel it all reads well. I wasn't able to zoom in to see the detail. What a treat to have some light. We were literally in the fog here for weeks!!

  2. Hi Carolyn, welcome to the blog and what a lovely painting here. I like it very much and its very inviting. No critiques here other than I wouldn't mind seeing a few more cool greens in the shadow areas and maybe a dark stone or two along the road side in the foreground. The eye in most cases enters the painting from the bottom and moves up into the painting so, a bit more excitement on the bottom foreground would grab the eye's interest right away. The lower foreground is as soft and high keyed in value as the distant house . Maybe just a hit of something dark in the red area on the lower right would do it?

Asisde from the minor issue, a lovely painting here. Please feel free to use this blog as much as you like and comment on anything you wish. Thanks so much for showing us your work . Hope to see more. Brian

  4. Wow, I'm assuming you've painted for a long time--a lot of great stuff going on here. It definitely has a very familiar Florida feel to it. As usual, Brian's advice sounds great. I hope you'll post and comment often!
